Disability History & Awareness

The first two weeks of October are Disability History and Awareness Weeks.  Section 1003.4205, Florida Statutes, entitled Disability History and Awareness Instruction, was signed into law in 2008.  It requires school districts to designate the first two weeks of October as Disability History and Awareness Weeks and also promotes providing instruction for students in all public schools to expand student knowledge, understanding, and awareness of individuals with disabilities, disability history, and the disability rights movement.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month

October is National Bullying Prevention Month!  Schools and organizations across the country are encouraged to come together in an effort to educate on the impact of bullying and raise awareness for bullying prevention.  The Florida Department of Education has a dedicated site with helpful resources for educators, parents, and students.  Please visit http://www.fldoe.org/schools/safe-healthy-schools/safe-schools/bullying-prevention.stml for more information.

Dads Take Your Child to School Day

Bonifay Elementary will be taking part in the new statewide initiative “Dads Take Your Child To School Day” on Wednesday, September 30.  We are going to allow dads, or any male role models involved in that student’s life, to walk with their student to class.  After walking them to class, teachers and staff will help those participating find their way to the Activity Building located on the east side of the school.  While we wait for everyone to arrive, refreshments will be provided.  At 8:00, a brief video and a few words will be shared with everyone.  We look forward to sharing this brief part of the day with you.  

Flooding Notice

September 29, 2015

Buses will not run on dirt roads this afternoon, September 29, due to flooding conditions. Buses will run on paved roads only this afternoon.

Buses will run their regular routes tomorrow morning, September 30, but will only travel on dirt roads that are passable.

FADSS Accountability Statement

I want to thank our teachers, staff and students for the extremely hard work they do to master the standards set out by the State.   

As a Constitutional Officer, I took an oath to uphold the laws of the State of Florida.  We have complied with those laws.   However, we have an obligation to stand up when the accountability system is flawed, and I am fully committed to doing what is in the best interests of our students and families.

Town Hall Meetings

Town Hall meetings will be held on the following dates:

  • Bonifay Schools - held in the HCHS Library - Monday, October 12, at 6:00 p.m.
  • Ponce de Leon Schools - held in the PDLH Library - Tuesday, October 13, at 6:00 p.m.
  • Bethlehem School - held in the BHS Library - Monday, October 19, at 6:00 p.m.
  • Poplar Springs School - held in the PSHS Library - Thursday, October 22, at 6:00 p.m.

Just Take 20

Just Take 20: An Exciting New Literacy and Family Engagement Campaign

In an effort to promote reading and everyday literacy in the real-world, the Florida Department of Education is excited to announce the launching of the Just Take 20 literacy campaign.

o Just Take 20 will provide Florida families with practical, easy-to-implement reading activities they can do with their children to add 20 minutes of reading to their day.

o The centerpiece of the Just Take 20 program is our custom web application, www.JustTake20.org.

o The website is accessible from a family’s computer, tablet, or smart phone and allows families the opportunity to create a customizable literacy plan tailored to their child’s grade level and needs.

o Each family can build its own family profile, score points, and earn badges while having fun with various reading and writing activities.  Each activity includes tips for struggling readers and is provided in English, Spanish, and Creole.

o The campaign also includes a portal for educators to download materials that will engage students and their families in literacy learning.

o The Just Take 20 campaign is available free to all Florida families and K-12 public schools. We hope you will visit www.JustTake20.org.

Automated Attendance Calls

September 8, 2015

Automated attendance calls are scheduled to begin September 9. Parents of students that are absent 1st period will be called around 9:15 each morning.  Parents are encouraged to update their contact information (phone numbers and email addresses) with the data clerk(s) at their child's school(s) to ensure school and district communication channels are open and important information reaches all parents/guardians.
